History

The Rosauers Open Invitational started in 1988 when a group of Spokane area Golf Professionals realized their goal of bringing a Pacific Northwest Section Major to town, which they achieved by developing a relationship with Rosauers Supermarkets. The tournament has almost always been held at Indian Canyon GC, which was designed by E. Chandler Egan – who also designed Pebble Beach GC. PGA Professional Corey Prugh of Manito CC holds the record for the most wins (2009, 2011, 2013 & 2015). Amateur Derek Bayley set the 54 hole-tournament record of 189 (27-under par) at at MeadowWood GC in 2016. Bayley also holds the 18 hole tournament record of 59, 13-under par the same year at MeadowWood GC.

History

The Northwest Open is a significant part of Northwest golf history. The list of past champions reads like a who’s who in Pacific Northwest Golf. 16 members of the Pacific Northwest Section’s Hall of Fame are Northwest Open Champions. The early years were dominated by Seattle Golf Club’s Robert Johnstone (who won 6 of the first 10 events) and “Long Jim” Barnes. Barnes, the professional at Tacoma C&GC from 1911 – 1915, won the first two PGA Championships (1916, 1919) in addition to the 1921 U.S. Open and the 1925 British Open! Spokane’s Marvin “Bud” Ward captured six championships over a 22 year span, five as an amateur and his last as a professional. The 54-hole tournament record of 193 was set by amateur Max Sekulic at Wine Valley GC in 2021.

History

The Senior PGA Professional Championship was established in 1952. Some can remember way back in 1965 when Harry Umbinetti was the top money winner of the event taking home a whopping $250 dollars. Back then, the championship was held at the Yakima Elks’ G&CC with only 21 professionals battling it out for the mere sum of $920 dollars. The famous Bob Duden won the championship six times during the 70’s and seven times overall. Today this is a popular event for Section seniors.

History

The Pacific Northwest Professional-Amateur Championship started when a young head professional named John Junor and his amateur partner won back to back titles at the magnificent Seattle Golf Club in 1924 and 1926 (no championship in 1925). Professional Walter Pursey and amateur Harry Givan topped Junor in the late 30’s with a three-peat victory at Seattle GC twice and Alderwood GC once. As the years went on, many great players etched their names into the record books as champions of this event. Long time professional Don Bies and his partners have seen numerous championships winning three of them in 1961 at Glendale CC, 1964 at Seattle GC, and in 1966 at Yakima CC. Other greats such as Bunny Mason (1963) and Jerry Mowlds (1969, 1978) have all had their share of the title. The tournament record of 122 was set by Jeff Gove & Derek Slackman in 2017 and tied by Corey Prugh & Reid Hatley in 2021.

History

Created in honor of Robert Hudson of Portland Golf Club, this event pairs the Section’s top professionals against the area’s top amateurs.

Robert Hudson photo

Robert A. Hudson was a very successful Portland businessman whose firm, Hudson House, was one of the nation’s leading wholesale grocers. Hudson played golf at Portland Golf Club and was devoted to the game. During World War II, the PGA of America was trying to keep its Tour alive and was in dire need of sponsors. Hudson stepped up to the plate with the urging of Larry Lamberger, Portland Golf Club head professional, and offered to underwrite a 72-hole open tournament with a purse of $10,000. Thus the 1944 Portland Open was born, and Sam Snead won it. Hudson stayed with the program and went on to sponsor the 1945 Portland Open (in which Ben Hogan set the 72-par 72-hole scoring record of 27-under-par 261) and the 1946 PGA Championship, won by Hogan. Hudson went on to sponsor Portland Opens in 1948 and 1949 and the Western Open in 1955, all at Portland Golf Club, and he became the first chairman of the PGA Advisory Committee.
