In a celebration of excellence, the Pacific Northwest Section PGA proudly announces the recipients of its prestigious 2024 Special Awards. Recognizing outstanding performance across 13 categories, these winners, acknowledged by their peers, epitomize the pinnacle of achievement among the PNW PGA’s 1,300 dedicated professionals spanning Washington, Oregon, Northern Idaho, Western Montana, and Alaska.
Golf Professional of the Year
Chris Nowlen, PGA, of Missoula Country Club, is the 2024 Golf Professional of the Year, celebrated for his exemplary leadership, service, and dedication to the game. Nowlen has served as a chapter and section board member for over a decade, is the current President of the Pacific Northwest Section, and has served on the National Junior Player Development Committee. He is praised for his collaboration with Section CEO Frank Talarico, fostering best-practice operations. Beyond his professional roles, Nowlen supports junior golf, organizes charitable events, and volunteers tirelessly. His innovative leadership and commitment make him a model PGA Golf Professional.
Assistant Golf Professional of the Year
Chris Myrvold, PGA, of Tualatin Country Club, was named the 2024 Assistant Golf Professional of the Year for his exceptional leadership, service, and dedication. As Oregon Chapter Secretary and former Tournament Committee Chair, Chris implemented impactful changes, improving organization and inclusivity. Passionate about PGA HOPE, he champions veterans’ causes, organizing events like a Las Vegas tournament to raise awareness for PTSD support. Chris also took the initiative as Tualatin CC’s historian, compiling and sharing the club’s rich history with members and the community. His commitment to leadership, veterans, and preserving golf’s legacy exemplifies the ideals of the Assistant Professional of the Year.
Teacher of the Year
Bruce Stewart, PGA, Life Member from Molalla, OR, earned the 2024 Teacher of the Year Award. Renowned in Oregon, Bruce has developed elite golfers, nurturing talent from a young age to championship success. His students’ achievements include setting records and excelling at national and international levels. Bruce also mentors fellow golf professionals, fostering collaboration and sharing expertise within the Oregon Chapter PGA. His dedication to developing players and guiding peers reflects his profound impact on the sport. Bruce’s exemplary teaching and leadership make him a standout in golf instruction.
Professional Development Award
Carrie De Gree, PGA, of Royal Oaks Country Club, is the recipient of the 2024 Professional Development Award, honored for her dedication to education and mentorship. Carrie’s career has been shaped by learning from and working alongside some of the finest professionals in the Pacific Northwest. Mentorship has been a cornerstone of her journey, leading her to pay it forward and resurrect the Mentorship Conference, which has gained national recognition. As Chapter President, Section Education Chair, and a member of the National Mentoring Taskforce, Carrie’s commitment to professional development is unparalleled. She has achieved all four PGA certifications, exemplifying her service-minded leadership and dedication to fostering growth within the profession.
Bill Strausbaugh Award
Jeff Simonds, PGA, of Bandon Dunes, received the prestigious Bill Strausbaugh Award for his exceptional mentorship and leadership. With over 20 years as Director of Golf, a promotion to General Manager, and a Master Professional certification in 2016, Jeff has guided hundreds of PGA Members, associates, and PGM students. A past president of the Oregon Chapter PGA, he currently serves as chair of the mentoring & orientation committee. His contributions span the Evans Scholarship, OGA, PGA Junior League, and USGA events. Jeff also revamped the awards process for efficiency and brings strong representation to PGA meetings.
Patriot Award
Josh McKinley, PGA, of GOLFTEC – Liberty Lake, earns the 2024 Patriot Award for his steadfast support of U.S. Armed Forces members and veterans. Over his 16-year career, Josh has passionately advocated for programs like PGA HOPE and Patriot Golf Days across Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington. As a lead trainer and adaptive golf expert, he personally coached veterans and spearheaded initiatives in 2024 like the Central Oregon Patriot Golf Day tournament and Spokane’s Patriot Day. Beyond coaching, Josh supports Folds of Honor and offers discounts and free lessons to veterans, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to making golf accessible and impactful for those who have served.
Player Development Award
Mitchell Girard, PGA, of Meadow Park Golf Course, is the 2024 Player Development Award recipient, recognized for his innovative programs that attract and retain golfers of all ages and skill levels. Mitchell oversees all programming at Meadow Park, including PGA Junior League, Beyond the Bell, camps, and tournaments. His efforts impacted over 2,300 participants in 2024 alone. As a mentor, he shares his expertise with PGA Associates, equipping them to deliver top-tier initiatives, ensuring the continued growth of the game. Mitchell’s work exemplifies a model of dedication and creativity in player development, inspiring professionals across the industry.
Youth Player Development Award
Michelle Grafos, PGA, of Esmeralda Golf Course, earned the 2024 Youth Player Development Award for significant contributions to youth golf through her leadership and innovative programming. She serves as chair of the Inland Empire Chapter PGA’s player development committee. As Director of Player Development at Esmeralda, she coaches juniors and leads multiple league teams and camps. Michelle’s influence extends beyond Esmeralda, including 18 years as a high school coach and active leadership in local and state golf committees. Her accolades, such as being a US Kids Top 50 Master Coach, highlight her impact. Michelle is known for fostering life skills like honesty, respect, and hard work in young players, inspiring the next generation of golfers and PGA Professionals alike.
Merchandiser of the Year – Public
Kennedy Swann Bodiford, PGA of Tokatee Golf Club earned the 2024 Public Merchandiser of the Year Award in the Public category. She maintained impressive sales per round, and gross sales surged under her leadership. Kennedy’s hands-on involvement in her pro shop’s renovation, from design to construction, showcased her commitment to elevating the customer experience. Her ability to blend diverse product offerings with a focus on customer relationships has transformed her shop into a model of operational success.
Merchandiser of the Year – Private
Travis Olson, PGA of Rock Creek Cattle Company earned the 2024 Merchandiser of the Year Award in the Private category. By aligning his merchandising philosophy with the preferences of the club’s members, Travis has driven strong revenues and maintained high-quality offerings. A collaborative leader, Travis involves his team in every step of the merchandising process, fostering creativity and professional growth among staff members. His hands-on approach and dedication to delivering exceptional member experiences have solidified his reputation as a standout professional.
Merchandiser of the Year – Resort
Jessica McClellan, PGA of Bandon Dunes – Old Macdonald, was named the 2024 Merchandiser of the Year in the Resort category. Under her guidance, gross merchandise sales have seen significant growth. Jessica’s innovative stocking strategies and expert product knowledge have been instrumental in managing limited storage space while driving growth. Despite rising costs, her team maintained robust net income, highlighting her effective cost management. Her success in maximizing sales per square foot underscores her ingenuity and dedication to excellence.
Deacon Palmer Award
Thomas Kollasch, PGA, of Olympia C&GC, received the 2024 Deacon Palmer Award for his resilience, selflessness, and dedication to mentoring others. Despite a severe hardships, Kollasch persevered with grace and humor, embodying the values of the PGA. He is committed to “sewing good seeds into others,” helping countless individuals succeed in golf and hospitality. His philosophy, leadership, and moral character inspire all who know him. Kollasch’s life story exemplifies perseverance and service, leaving a lasting impact on the community and the game of golf.
Perry Williams Award
Molly Cooper, PGA, of the Pacific Northwest PGA Section, is the 2024 Perry Williams Award recipient, recognized for her unwavering dedication to the rules of golf and outstanding service. A Certified Professional in Player Development, General Management, and Golf Operations, Molly has served the PNW PGA since 2004 and previously earned this award in 2012. In 2024, she worked at all Section events, exemplifying her commitment to excellence and the game.
