The Northwest Open holds a special place in Pacific Northwest golf history, with a champion’s roster that reads like a “who’s who” of the sport in the region. Fifteen members of the Pacific Northwest Section Hall of Fame have hoisted this trophy.
In its early years, the tournament was dominated by Robert Johnstone of Seattle Golf Club, who captured six of the first ten championships, and “Long Jim” Barnes, Head Professional at Tacoma Country & Golf Club from 1911–1915. Barnes went on to win the first two PGA Championships (1916, 1919), the 1921 U.S. Open, and the 1925 British Open. Another legend, Marvin “Bud” Ward of Spokane, won six Northwest Open titles over 22 years—five as an amateur and one as a professional—along with a National Amateur Championship. His total might have been higher if not for the tournament’s hiatus during WWII.

The Home Course was designed by golf course architect Mike Asmundson of Scottsdale, Arizona and opened on June 29, 2007. It is a walkable layout with panoramic views of Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains, and Mount Rainier present throughout the golf course. The Home Course was selected by the United States Golf Association as the assisting course for the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship. It is truly a great championship golf course at the home of golf in the Pacific Northwest, hosting the 2018 PNW PGA Assistant Professional Championship and 2015 PNW PGA Senior Professional Championship, as well as the Pelzer Golf Northwest Open Invitational in 2022-2025.
