Round Two Update
Scott Erdmann, PGA – Tigard, Ore. – Second-Round 80
Q. Not exactly what you were looking for this week, but what can you take from this week positive?
SCOTT ERDMANN: You don’t want to come to a major championship not being kind of spot on. You know, the funny thing is that I putted really well and I drove it okay. But ball striking, I had no clue where the ball was going. I didn’t know if it was going left or right. Nerves obviously compounded the issue. It’s different because you’re used to hitting 9 irons and pitching wedges and 8 irons and 7 irons into greens, and when you just hit your hybrid 3 wood on the par 5, here you’ve got hybrids and long irons into everything, so I suppose that’s the one thing I really need to work on, not for everyday golf but certainly for coming out and playing in tournaments like this.
It’s just experience.
Q. Positive week for you?
SCOTT ERDMANN: Overall, I think I’ll reflect probably and say that, yes. Right now, no. I mean, how could it not be, right? First major championship, and it certainly didn’t go the way I wanted, but you learn from each experience and go from there and you move on. I’m really disappointed.
Q. 17 and 18 you struggled both days. Are those two of the hardest holes you’ve ever played in your life?
SCOTT ERDMANN: You know, 17 today really wasn’t tough. I didn’t think I had a good number, a good club. It’s just only my swing right now, just kind of lost.
Q. 18 is a bear, though?
SCOTT ERDMANN: 18 is a bear. The thing is it just tempts you so much because you’re there where you can knock it on, so that’s not an issue, but boy, is it hard to hit that fairway, and I just haven’t done that yet. I was in the right rough today and had a real hanging lie, but it was kind of one of those things, what am I going to do, lay up? I’m 13, 14, 15 over par at the time.
Q. How many times are you going to play the Atlanta Athletic Club in the PGA Championship, you know.
SCOTT ERDMANN: It was just kind of one of those things where you just go for it and see what happens. Yeah, no sense in laying up under the circumstances. It would have been different if I was in a different position.

Scott Erdmann, PGA – Tigard, Ore. – First-Round 80
Q. Obviously not what you were looking for, but what went on out there?
SCOTT ERDMANN: Oh, gosh. You know, the front nine was just kind of rolling along, kind of got off to a slow start, but righted the ship and just was cruising. It’s hard to attribute it to kind of where the wheels came off. Probably the easiest spot to maybe say would be 12, par 5, hit a 4 hybrid in, kind of came out of it and missed it and came back in the water. Still made a bogey, wasn’t the end of the world. Parred the next hole from a tough spot, and then I suppose if there was one it was a collection of things. Terrible bunker shot on 14, bad tee shot on 15. It got ugly quick.
Q. Can you bounce back? What’s the goal for tomorrow?
SCOTT ERDMANN: Well, the goal is just to at it. No different, I suppose, than it ever would be, just one shot at a time and try to play better. Yeah, just one shot at a time.
Q. I know that we’ve talked, it’s been an incredible week for you, though, being here, right?
SCOTT ERDMANN: Absolutely, absolutely incredible. It’s been a lot of fun. Played some amazing practice rounds with some great people and everybody was great and really nice. There was no kind of big timing that you think you might possibly encounter with Tour pros, but no, everyone was great. It’s been a lot of fun.
Jeff Coston, PGA – Blaine, Wash. – First-Round 76
Q. When you came out today did you expect to be one stroke ahead of Tiger Woods by the end of the day?
JEFF COSTON: Well, no, I don’t even know what Tiger Woods shot, but man, he’s a great player. He’s always been a nice guy to me honestly. So I just want to play Jeff Coston golf. I didn’t quite do it, but hit some good shots, made some mistakes I don’t normally make, and I usually hit a lot more fairways. I struggled doing that today, and I made some silly errors, and I finished strong, so I was happy about that. But I’m just really happy at age 55 to be able to play in this golf tournament, and some of my best golf is ahead of me.
Q. How did the course play?
JEFF COSTON: You know, it’s a hard golf course. You know coming down Sunday afternoon it’s going to be really fun for people to watch those last five, six holes. You know, anything can happen that back nine. It’s a really wonderful golf course, and when I was on the Tour I lived in Orlando so I love the South, I love southern people, and I love golf, so I’m just happy to be here. But it’s a very difficult golf course, and I look forward to playing tomorrow.
Q. Talk about the whole experience coming from a Club Professional Championship to the PGA Championship.
JEFF COSTON: Well, you know, I played the Tour before most of you guys were born. I played the Tour in the ’80s and played the Nationwide Tour in the ’90s, and I’ve had a golf academy the last 17 years. It is really a nice thing for me. I’ve had an amazing week, just not only the golf and seeing people, making new friends, and it’s been a great week for me. Couldn’t be better. I hope maybe I play a good round tomorrow would be fun.
Q. Home away from home almost?
JEFF COSTON: Yeah, I enjoy the South very much, always have.
Q. What’s your plan of attack for tomorrow?
JEFF COSTON: You know, I would like to play Jeff Coston golf, one hole at a time, clear and committed and drive it in the fairway and just go for it and see what we do.
