I’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on friendships. I feel incredibly blessed to be writing this month’s article while on vacation in Hawaii, poolside with my wife and our best friends—whom we met through golf, of course.
As golf professionals, this game is an integral part of our lives. One of its greatest gifts is the friendships it fosters. Whether it’s on the lesson tee, in the boardroom, on the course, or even on a plane chatting with a stranger about the sport, golf constantly brings people together and builds meaningful connections.
Golf unites families, brings couples closer, and even helps mend broken relationships. It’s a universal conversation starter that makes people relatable. Think about it—people will scream, jump around, and hug complete strangers after witnessing a hole-in-one!
When we play for fun or compete in events, we get to see both the best and the most vulnerable sides of people. Watching someone problem-solve, overcome setbacks, or celebrate an eagle offers deep insight into their character. More often than not, it sparks a desire to get to know them better. Add in some “swing oil” at the 19th hole—personally, I enjoy a Pear High Noon or a vodka soda with lime—and lifelong friendships are formed.
As a GM/Director of Golf, I don’t have the chance to teach as often as I’d like, but I’m grateful for the opportunities I have. Most of my students these days are board members, business associates, or friends. Teaching brings me immense joy, and I cherish the deep friendships it creates. Like many of you, I’ve helped turn tears into smiles, often gaining a new friend in the process—friends of all ages, all thanks to the game of golf.
Some of the most rewarding friendships I’ve built have been professional. I’m fortunate to be part of a lively group chat with PGA Professionals from the Western Montana Chapter, where we mostly talk golf, football, and just how bad the Bears are! I also value the relationships I’ve built through governance—with fellow officers, board members, section staff, and peer leaders across the country. This profession has blessed me with friendships nationwide, and I couldn’t be more grateful. I hope you feel just as fortunate.
As we work through the heart of winter, don’t forget to complete your education requirements before the MSR cycle wraps up in June. There are plenty of great opportunities available, so don’t delay.
It’s also the perfect time to review the 2025 tournament calendar and set your schedule and plan to participate in your favorite Section Championships and chapter events.
Here’s to friendship and a great year ahead!
