May 2025 CEO’s Report

The Power of Professionalism

Frank Talarico, PNWPGA CEO

In today’s increasingly competitive golf industry, technical ability and operational know-how are only part of the equation. Whether you’re managing a club, leading a team, selling equipment, or offering instruction, your long-term success hinges on two essential—and often underemphasized—traits: professionalism and strong interpersonal skills. These qualities don’t just elevate your personal brand; they drive business outcomes and set a powerful example for others.

Professionalism goes beyond showing up on time or dressing the part. It’s about how you communicate, how you follow through, and how you treat others—especially under pressure. A professional earns trust, builds respect, and sets the tone for those around them. In an industry where reputation drives results, the way you carry yourself matters deeply.

Strong interpersonal skills are the natural complement to professionalism. Golf is a people business—every lesson, sale, or interaction is built on relationships. Can you listen actively? Read the room? Build trust? These skills lead to better student retention, stronger team performance, and long-term customer loyalty. In an age of growing automation, human connection remains your biggest competitive edge.

Moreover, in a landscape where automation and technology are growing rapidly, human connection is what differentiates exceptional service. A great simulator can analyze a swing, but only a skilled instructor can inspire confidence. An e-commerce platform can sell golf gear, but a knowledgeable, personable salesperson can create a loyal customer. People still do business with people, and they remember how you made them feel more than what you sold them.

Just as importantly, professionalism and interpersonal strength position you as a role model. Whether you realize it or not, others are watching—employees, junior golfers, colleagues, and peers. In a culture that can sometimes celebrate brashness over character, being the example of integrity, respect, and clear communication sends a message about what excellence really looks like. Leadership isn’t about title—it’s about influence. And influence comes from consistency, trust, and emotional intelligence.

Investing in these traits doesn’t require expensive training or certifications. It requires self-awareness, feedback, and a genuine desire to grow. Practice empathy. Be dependable. Learn how to give constructive feedback. Develop emotional resilience. Ask more questions. Follow through. These are the habits that not only help you thrive in business, but also build a career—and legacy—you can be proud of.

In golf, as in life, your reputation precedes you. The way you treat others, communicate under stress, and handle responsibility will open more doors than any swing tip or sales script ever could. Professionalism and interpersonal skills aren’t just the “soft stuff”—they’re the foundation of your success.

Important Notes and Announcements

PNWPGA FOUNDATION POSITION CREATED

It is my pleasure to announce that the PNWPGA Board of Directors has approved the creation of the section’s first-ever PNWPGA Foundation Executive Director position. As you are aware, two years ago, the Board commissioned a task force, led by Past President Mr. Bryan Tunstill, PGA to explore and evaluate the viability of a foundation.  That Task Force recommended to the board to transition the then PNWPGA Junior Fund, a separate 501 C3 corporation, into a public benefit operating nonprofit focused on growth of the game initiatives, namely PGA HOPE, PGA Junior League, PGA JAM, and Drive, Chip, and Putt. Those programs were then relocated under the Foundation in 2024.  In 2025, it our goal to attract and retain a leader in this role who will share this vision and bring his or her own perspective on the natural evolution of this operation. View the job posting here.
